Radio Frequency (RF) skin tightening

What is Radio Frequency (RF)

Technically speaking, radio frequency is the number of oscillations (or waves) per second of the electric and magnetic fields within the radio waves portion of the electromagnetic spectrum.By applying RF energy to the human body, which can conduct current and therefore act as part of the electrical circuit, any resistance encountered by the energy flow will cause heat to be produced at the site of maximum resistance. RF energy is able to penetrate deeper into the skin and affect the deeper dermis and subcutaneous layers, causing tightening and improvements to the underlying tissue structure, with change in skin texture, fine lines and wrinkling.

What are Radio frequency treatments?

Radio frequency skin tightening (RF) is an aesthetic technique that uses RF energy to heat tissue and stimulate subdermal collagen production in order to reduce the appearance of fine lines and loose skin. The technique induces tissue remodeling and production of new collagen and elastin. The process provides an alternative to facelift and other cosmetic surgeries.

Radio Frequency Facials are considered among the most effective non-surgical procedures available today. This heat stimulates collagen production, and that, in turn, triggers tissue contraction. The overall result is tighter, brighter skin and a significant reduction in sags and wrinkles.

The treatments take 30-60 minutes in total, and patients can return to normal activities immediately with no side effects other than some redness that resolves quickly.

Facial Rejuvenation (skin lift) & Saggy Skin Correction

The radiofrequency facelift has been approved by the FDA as a non-surgical treatment for wrinkles and facial skin imperfections. This treatment requires no downtime. Best of all, results are immediately noticeable, and they become even more so in the weeks following the treatment as the build-up of collagen effects further skin contraction.

How Radio Frequency Face Treatments Work

The radio frequency treatment for facial skin works by administering low amplitude (low power) high frequency (in the RF range) currents onto the area of skin treated via a probe like electrode. The currents passed cause heat to build up in the skin tissue. This heat works to contract the dermis (the upper skin layer) resulting in wrinkle reduction (some wrinkles are eliminated all together).

As we age, sun exposure, environmental factors, and stress affect the skin’s elasticity and strength, causing unwanted lines in our faces. Collagen is the substance that keeps skin firm and youthful. As we age, the substance naturally breaks down. At the same time, skin health deteriorates, causing production of collagen to slow. Using radio frequency microcurrent’s to stimulate the skin at the dermal level, this seems to improve the health of skin, and supports collagen production. This appears to firm skin tone, strengthens skin, and minimizes sagging and wrinkles.

Radio Frequency Benefits

Thermal Energy. The main component of the treatment is thermal energy, which is delivered deep into the dermal layer of the skin. This assists in the healing of skin by tightening the skin, promoting collagen production thus wrinkle reduction, as well as increasing oxygen and nutrients availability which supports the natural regenerative processes.

Stimulation. The microcurrent also provides massage-like stimulation to the surface of the skin. This helps to keep the epidermis healthy. Massage encourages blood flow to the surface of the skin, giving your skin that youthful “glow.”

  • Forehead (lifts brows and tightens forehead skin)
  • Under Eyes (thickens skin and tightens and lifts the upper cheek)
  • Cheeks (lifts slightly and diminishes enlarged pores)
  • Mid-Face and Jaw Line (diminishes jowls and sagging along the jaw line)
  • Neck (treats “chicken neck” by tightening skin and diminishing wrinkles)

Common Anti-Aging Concerns Treated with RF Facials

Radiofrequency energy is primarily used to treat skin laxity through facial tightening. This treatment is effective on both light and dark skin, and best results are seen by patients in their mid-30s to mid-50s, who display mild to moderate facial sagging.

When can I expect to see results?

Most clients see gradual and cumulative results throughout the wrinkle reduction treatment.

The total number of required treatment sessions depends on your skin’s condition.

A Radio Frequency treatment once a week is recommended until collagen weakness is reconstructed. We normally recommend 6 sessions to cause Neocollagenesis, session needed will differ for each client as everyone is an individual.

A monthly treatment is recommended to keep up with the maintenance of your collagen strengthening and reconstructing of existing collagen.

* NOTE: If there is an excess of sagging skin (as seen in many patients over 60), this procedure may not achieve the desired results. In such cases, a traditional mid-face, face or brow lift performed by an accredited plastic surgeon may be recommended as the more appropriate course of action.

Who should not have a Radiofrequency for Facial Rejuvenation treatment?

As long as you are generally healthy and don’t have any skin diseases or infections in the area treated, there are few medical reasons why patients should not undergo this treatment.

People with sensory disturbance to the skin may not be considered good candidates as this could make the reporting of discomfort during the procedure unreliable, leading to potential harm.

Although there is no evidence that this treatment is harmful for pregnant women, you would generally be advised to wait until after you have given birth before embarking upon a course of treatment.

More importantly, people with electrical devices e.g., pacemakers, or metal implants e.g., artificial metal hip joints, heart valves or dental plates, cannot be treated because RF current flowing through the body may interfere with these devices or heat up metal implants, which could be dangerous.
